Acreage & trails
Acreage, Trail & Pasture Clearing
Larger properties rarely need every square foot cleared. More often the job is a set of pieces: a trail loop, a field edge pushed back, a pasture reclaimed, a homesite opened, a view cut through the trees. Crews price and plan those pieces separately.

Common pieces of an acreage job
| Piece | Usually involves |
|---|---|
| Trails and access roads | Mulched paths wide enough for walking, ATVs or a truck |
| Field edge reclamation | Pushing the tree line back to where the field used to end |
| Pasture recovery | Mulching brush and saplings so the pasture can be mowed or grazed |
| Thinning | Removing smaller and crowded trees for healthier woods |
| Homesite and view clearing | Opening a spot for a house or a sight line to a pond or field |
How crews usually price bigger land
After a walk-through, many quote by the acre or by the machine-day. Thickness of growth matters more than raw acreage, and so does terrain. Ask each company to map out what it would do and price it by section. That way you can start with the trail or the homesite and add the rest when the budget allows.
Sort these out first
- Where your boundaries actually are, especially in woods
- Creeks, ponds, wet spots and their banks, which deserve extra care
- Where a trailer can unload and how machines reach each area
- Whether any area needs approval before work; check with your county
- What you'll do with the land next: mow, graze, hunt, build or simply enjoy it
Ask each crew
- Can you break the estimate down by section?
- How wide will trails be, and what surface will they have?
- How do you handle creek banks and wet areas?
- What will it look like in six months?
Triangle acreage
Typical requests come from horse and hobby farms in north and east Wake, family land in Johnston County around Clayton, and wooded tracts in Franklin County near Youngsville and Franklinton.
Frequently asked
Can I clear a few acres now and more later?
Yes. Phasing is common. Ask for prices by area.
Is mulching enough to turn woods back into pasture?
For brush and young trees, often. Bigger trees and stumps may need other equipment, and pasture establishment is its own step.
What about trails along a creek?
Talk to the crew and check with your county before working near creeks or other water.
